Haw.

Adrian Hardy Haworth (Kingston upon Hull, Anglaterra, 19 d'abril de 1767 - Chelsea, íbid. 24 d'agost de 1833 ) va ser un botànic, carcinólogo i entomólogo anglés.

Biografia

Era un dels fills del chamberlan, Benjamin Haworth d'Haworth Hall. S'orienta la seua formació per les seues preceptores cap a la carrera d'advocat de bufet. Pero té poc interés pel dret i cap als 21 anys, despuix d'haver heretat dels seus pares, pot consagrar-se al seu verdader amor, la història natural

En 1792, s'establix en Chelsea a on es troba en William Jones (1750-1818) quí tindrà una gran influència sobre ell. Participa en l'activitat de Societat linneana de Londres, Haworth es convertix en membre en 1798. Utilisa la biblioteca i el herbario del seu amic Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) i freqüenta regularment el Real Jardí Botànic de Kew. En botànica, s'especialisa sobre les plantes de bulbos i el gènero Mesembryanthemum. Va ser un gran coleccioniste de plantes suculentas

Funda una efímera societat entomològica, la Aurelian Society (tercera societat científica d'este nom), en 1812. Va publicar numeroses obres sobre la sistemàtica de les palometes britàniques. En 1802, Prodromus Lepidopterorum Britannicorum. En 1803, va escomençar a publicar Lepidoptera Britannica. Va seguir la sistemàtica de classificació que havia posat en vigor Carlos Linneo (1707-1778) i per Johan Christian Fabricius (1745-1808). El seu treball no seria sobrepassat fins a 1857 pel Manual of British Butterflies and Moths d'Henry Tibbats Stainton (1822-1892). També es va especialisar en els camarones i és l'autor de numerosos tàxons, entre ells:

Va morir durant una epidèmia de còlera. La seua colecció entomològica, contenint uns 40.000 espècimen, es va vendre en subastas. La venda dura sèt dies pero solament alcancen a la suma de 552 lliures. Les seues espècies tipo es conserven actualment en la colecció Hope d'Oxford. El seu herbario, contenint 20.000 espècimen està també actualment en Oxford. La seua rica biblioteca es va vendre també en subastes i es va dispersar.
