Clarias

Clarias és un gènero de peixos gat (orde Siluriformes) de la família de Clariidae (peixos gat capaços de respirar fòra de l'aigua).[1] El seu nom es deriva del grec chlaros, que significa viu, animat, donada la capacitat d'estos peixos de permanéixer vius fora de l'aigua llarc temps.

Taxonomia

Clarias s'ha definit com parafilético. Una espècie del gènero Heterobranchus (H. longifilis) es troba profundament inserta en este grup.[2]

Descripció

Les espècies d'este gènero es reconeixen pels seus aletes dorsal i anal allargada en les seues bases, que els donen un aspecte similar al de les anguiles. Tenen cossos prims, cap òsseu aplanada i una boca àmplia terminal, en quatre parells de barbes. Posseïxen un gran orgue adicional de respiració format per arcs branquials modificats. Posseïxen forts espines pero solament en les aletes pectorals.[3]

Alguns membres d'este gènero poden alcançar més d'un metro de llongitut (com Clarias anguillaris,[4] C. buthupogon,[5] C. gariepinus[6] o C. macrocephalus[7]). Són de ràpit creiximent i molt fèrtils, reproduint-se fàcilment en aigües en condicions òptimes d'oxigen.

Són de coloració uniforme grisa obscur, fanc negre o marró.
