Joseph Nelson Rose

Joseph Nelson Rose ( 11 de giner de 1862 - 4 de maig de 1928) va ser un botànic nortamericà. Va nàixer en Comtat d'Union (Indiana), Indiana.

Biografia

El seu pare va fallir durant la guerra de Secessió Nortamericana quan Joseph Rose era jove. Més tart, va terminar l'escola secundària en Liberty, Indiana. Va rebre el seu Ph. D. del Colege Wabash en 1889. Va contraure matrimoni en Lou Beatrice Sims en 1888 i va tindre tres fills i tres filles. Rose va treballar per al Departament d'Agricultura dels Estats Units i després va ser assistent curador del Institut Smithsoniano en 1896. Mentres que Rose treballava en el museu nacional, va adquirir profunts coneiximents sobre vàries famílies de plantes, com Apiaceae i Cactaceae. Va fer varis viages a Mèxic, i va presentar espècimen al Smithsoniano i al Jardí Botànic de Nova York. Junt a Nathanielord Britton, Rose va publicar variats artículs sobre Crassulaceae. Va abandonar per un temps el seu treball en el Smithsoniano i va realisar varis viages a Amèrica del Sur: 1915 en Chile, Perú, Bolívia; 1916 en Argentina, Brasil; 1918 en Veneçola, Equador; i, va publicar en Britton, l'obra de quatre volums, The Cactaceae (1919 - 1923), ilustrada per Mary Emily Eaton (1873-1961).^[1]

Més tart, Rose va tornar al seu treball en el Smithsoniono, realisant múltiples contribucions al camp de la botànica.
