John Torrey

John Torrey (15 d'agost de 1796 - 10 de març de 1873) va ser un mege, polític, químic, botànic, micólogo, briólogo, i pteridólogo nortamericà.

Biografia

Aborigen de Nova York. Als seus 15 o 16 anys, el seu pare rep un lloc en la penitenciaría de Greenwich, i en eixa ciutat, trava relació en Amos Eaton, un pioner dels estudis d'història natural en EE. UU. Deprén els rudimentos de botànica, i una miqueta de mineralogia i química. Abans d'eixa trobada, pensava orientar-se cap a la mecànica. En 1815 comença la carrera de medicina, rebent-se en 1818, i obri consultori en la ciutat. En el següent any publica el seu Catàlec de Plantes creixent espontàneament dins de les trenta milles de la ciutat de Nova York, i en 1824 el seu primer i únic volum de la seua Flora dels Estats Nortenys i Mijos, i Sistemàtica i Descripció de totes les Plantes descobertes en el nort de Virginia. En el mateix any és membre en química i geologia de l'Acadèmia Militar de West Point, i tres anys més tarde el professorat de química i de botànica en el "Colege de Meges i Cirugians de Nova York". Va estar enrolado en l'Eixèrcit com a assistent cirugià, mes poc apassionat per l'eixercici de la medicina, s'ocupa en realitat d'ensenyar química, mineralogia, geologia; deixant l'eixèrcit quatre anys més vesprada. En 1836 és nomenat "botànic de l'Estat de Nova York", i produïx la seua Flora de Nova York en 1843. constituïx un Herbario en 50.000 espècimen. I de 1838 a 1843 publica les primeres parts de Flora d'Estats Units, en l'assistència del seu pupil, Torra Gray. En 1853 és cap d'ensajos de l'Oficina Nacional d'Ensajos, pero continua interessat en ensenyar botànica, metiér que continua fins al seu decés. En 1860, Torrey dona el seu valiós herbario i la seua biblioteca botànica al Colege Columbia de l'Universitat, i va anar el primer president d'el "Club Torrey de Botànica", en 1873. També descriu el gènero de planta carnívora Darlingtonia, que va nomenar per un amic.

El seu nom s'honra en el chicotet gènero de coníferas Torreya Arn. 1838, trobat en Norteamérica, China i Japó. T. taxifolia, la nativa de Florida, és coneguda com la torreya de Florida, i també en el pi de Torrey Pinus torreyana Parry ex Carrière 1855 del sur de Califòrnia.
