Hernando de Magallanes

Fernão de Magalhães (conegut també com a Magallanes en castellà, Magellanus en llatí o Magellan en francés i anglés, entre atres variants), naixcut al nort de Portugal, provablement en Ponte da Barca,[1] al voltant de l'any 1480 i mort en l'illa de Mactan (vora l'illa de Cebú, en les Filipines) el 27 d'abril de 1521, fon un navegant i explorador portugués de l'época dels grans descobriments.

- ↑ L'únic document del sigle XVI que n'indica el lloc de naiximent és el manuscrit de Fernão de Oliveira, datat pels volts de l'any 1560. Esta font, força fiable i ben informada, descriu que Magalhães "naixqué en Porto") és la millor de les hipòtesis que tenim. No obstant això, la indicació del seu naiximent en Sabrosa és una faula que es va forjar en el sigle XIX a través d'uns documents que quatre historiadors portuguesos varen demostrar clarament falsos en els anys 1921-1939, lo que indica que no hi havia més que un lloc de naiximent... Malauradament, a pesar de l'evidència, este error s'ha repetit tantes vegades en un sigle i mig, inclús per part d'historiadors considerats seriosos, que ara sembla cisellada en marbre (vore el resum de les manifestacions en Chandeigne Xavier de Castro (eds.) 2007, p. 312-315).
