We mentioned before, that thehimation was sometimes pulled over the back of the head like aveil. But at a very early period Greek women wore real shorter FEMALE HEAD-DRESS. 175 or longer veils, called Kpifceiivov, KaXvirrpa, or KaXv/mfia, whichcovered the face up to the eyes, and fell over the neck and backin large folds, so as to cover, if necessary, the whole upper partof the body. The care bestowed on the hair was naturally stillgreater amongst women than amongst men. Fig. 223 shows anumber of terra-cotta heads of Athenian women published byStackelberg. These, and the numerous heads represented insculptures and gems, give an idea of the exquisite taste of thesehead-dresses.
