És originari del sur d'[[Àsia]], trobant-se per tot el [[subcontinent indi]] i en zones seques de [[Sri Lanka]], principalment en altituts inferiors als 1800 metros, habitant en regions propenques als 2000 metros en rares ocasions.<ref>Dodsworth, PTL (1912). «Occurrence of the Common Peafowl Pavo cristatus, Linnaeus in the neighbourhood of Simla, N.W.
