El tàxon va ser agrupat anteriorment junt en el turpial de l'Espanyola (''[[Icterus dominicensis]]''), turpial de les [[Bahames]] (''[[Icterus northropi]]'') i el turpial portorriqueny (''[[Icterus portoricensis]]'') en una sola espècie fins que els quatre varen ser elevats a espècies separades en 2010.<ref>Chesser, R.
