Està declarat Monument Nacional des de l&#039;any [[1931]].<br /> <br /> == Història ==<br /> <br /> La presència del castell és tan antiga com l&#039;orige de la ciutat i ya els íbers varen establir allí el seu primer assentament (&#039;&#039;Arse&#039;&#039;). Tradicionalment es parla del castell romà, fent en això referència a la civilisació que més ha marcat este monument i a on es trobava &#039;&#039;Saguntum&#039;&#039;. No obstant, en el castell queden pocs restants d&#039;orige romà i és un mosaic de cultures i civilisacions (íbers, romans, gots, àraps). La fortalea fon utilisada per les tropes franceses durant la [[Guerra de l&#039;Independència]] a l&#039;inici del [[sigle XIX]].<br /> <br /> == Descripció ==<br /> <br /> Es troba dividit en sèt places o recints independents: la plaça d&#039;Almenara, la plaça d&#039;Armes, la plaça de la Conillera, la plaça de la Ciutadella, la plaça Dos de Maig, la plaça de Sant Ferrando i Estudiants. En l&#039;interior de les muralles, que s&#039;estenen un quilómetro a lo llarc de la montanya, en el &#039;&#039;Antiquarium Epigráfico&#039;&#039; es pot contemplar una part de la colecció epigràfica més completa i significativa de la península ibèrica. Les inscripcions arrepleguen els aspectes més destacats i notables de la societat saguntina en distintes époques.
