Biografia

Entre les películes per les quals conseguí èxit, figuren The mark of Zorro (1920), The three musqueteers (1921), abdós de Fred Niblo, Robin Hood (1922), de Allan Dwan, The thief of Bagdad (1924), de Raoul Walsh, i The Black Pirate (1926), de Albert Parker.

Estigué casat en l'actriu Mary Pickford, en la que fundà en l'any 1919, junt en Charles Chaplin i D.W. Griffith, United Artists.

Considerat com el "rei d'Hollywood", fon el primer presentador dels Premis Òscar en l'any 1929. Fon el pare de l'actor Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. i amic i soci de Charles Chaplin, fins la seua mort en l'any 1939.
